Here's an interesting fact for you: even though Robert E. Lee served the Confederacy during the entire Civil War, he wasn't promoted to General-In-Chief until January 31, 1865 - and the Confederacy surrendered on April 9th! I'd always assumed he was the leader of the army the whole time until I read a civil war projects book a couple of years ago. Isn't it great how we learn right along with the kids?
